Drawing Upon Medical and Economic Studies to Guide Qualitative Methods in HCI

The conditions of gig work are mercurial: platforms’ policies and structures change often, algorithmic management software changes near instaneously. Thus, workers’ perceptions of and feelings towards gig work are subject to change as the conditions of their labor also changes. Methods in HCI should draw upon existing work in the fields of medicine and economics to design more robust studies that identify the nuances of worker <-> platform relationships and perceptions.
